MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Circa 1930 German Side Table
Located in New York, NY
Our table was made of birch, solid and veneered, stained a rich brown, and topped off with a slab of Bohemian breccia marble. We date it to around 1928, and attribute the design to Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, who coined the term Kultivierte Sachlichkeit (Cultured Objectivity) to describe his work, and distinguish it from the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) practiced by his contemporaries Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Lily Reich. The table bears a passing resemblance to a considerably simplified, marble-topped ovoid one that he designed for his 1934 Berlin living room. Breuhaus was a man on the make. The first of his three marriages was to the daughter of an industrialist, who financed the building of luxury villas and workers’ housing designed by his son-in-law. In 1929, Breuhaus, the son of a dentist, added “de Groot” to his name, falsely linking himself to a distinguished family of painters. By then, he’d been fudging his academic record for years. That didn’t prevent a teaching appointment at the State University of Bavaria, which allowed him to add the prestigious “Herr Professor” prefix to his name. Yet he never followed through on the teaching — he was far too busy designing more luxury villas (commissions he accepted only if he could furnish them as well), and products for his own company, which included furniture, textiles, wallpapers, lighting, and fine silver. In addition to designing aircraft interiors for Lufthansa, and pullman railroad...

Brown Saltman Solid Walnut End Table with Burl Walnut Inset
Located in Soquel, CA
Brown Saltman Solid Walnut End Table with Burl Walnut Inset Elegant end table designed by John Keal and manufactured by Brown Saltman. This piece is clean and modern, which highlights the gorgeous burl of the top. It will fit well with a variety of decor and design choices. 15"H x 18"D x 18"W At a time when many furniture makers were turning to cheaper materials for mass production, mid-century modern designer John Keal didn't shy away from utilizing quality woods in his work, like mahogany and walnut to create his coffee tables, cabinets and benches. While little is known about Keal, he was part of a powerhouse group that collaborated with Los Angeles furniture manufacturer Brown-Saltman in the 1940s and ‘50s. Other designers who had partnered with the firm during the mid-20th century included Greta Magnusson Grossman, Paul Frankl, Paul Laszlo, and Gilbert Rohde, a New York City-born designer who would help legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer Herman Miller avert financial disaster during the Great Depression. Brown-Saltman was established in 1923 and initially specialized in reproductions of furniture in period styles. When cofounder David Saltman met Frankl, the firm had discontinued its Early California collection and was producing modern furniture. Keal’s work also fit snugly into what we now call California modernism, which derived from the Bauhaus and International Style movements, and revolutionized the way we build homes today, not only in the Golden State but across the globe. Keal created sleek end tables...

Vintage Modern Rosewood Pair Cube Nightstands by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous vintage modern rosewood pair of cube shaped nightstands by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Comprised of gorgeous rosewood veneer, brass plated steel bands, and a single ebonized drawer in each nightstand. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are a few chips, nicks, or dings in the wood veneer and some rust spots on the brass plated steel bands. The smaller veneer flaws were filled while larger pieces were replaced for restoration, and it looks beautiful. The bands have been professionally cleaned and we left them with their small scratches, rust spots, and age marks as we did not want to change the authenticity of the piece and honestly, we love the look of a little age patina. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1970’s. NOTE: We have matching pieces including a queen headboard, large mirror, a wardrobe, and these nightstands.  You can find them all for sale here if they are still available. Double Debonaire!!! Modern Tessellated Mactan Stone Sqr End Table Peach Stripe Style Maitland Smith
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous modern tessellated Mactan stone square end table with a diagonal peach stripe and a round glass top with beveled edge in the style of Maitland Smith. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The wood base holding the side together had gotten wet at some point and puffed causing the corner seams to separate. We have installed a new bottom and pulled those seams together again. Work was done by our experienced staff. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1980-1990’s. NOTE: If you love this end table, we have a matching sofa table listed here for sale if it is still available. Also, we will ship with or without the glass top if you choose. Magnificent… Mactan Stone…. And the style of Maitland Smith!!! This is a marvelous square end table comprised of a gorgeous Mactan rough edge stone pedestal base featuring a smooth, polished diagonal peach stripe and a lovely round glass tabletop with a beveled edge in the style of Maitland Smith. So, a fun fact about Mactan stone… It is a sedimentary conglomerate of shale and coral quarried in the Philippines on an island called Opon which is located at the eastern part of the province of Cebu. It’s an island encircled by fascinating beaches and wondrous sights. The original name for these stones was "Coral stones" but that changed as the years passed by. Mactan Stones is Opon's Marvelous Gem. And this end table is DEFINITELY a gem!! Isn’t it GORGEOUS??? Its style is modern and a bit of Art Deco Revival with a Hollywood Regency and Mediterranean feel. Maybe even leaning a bit Postmodern… Either way, this spectacular end table is going to grace your home with its stunning presence whether on the side of a lounge chair in the living room holding a beverage or next to a chair in the sitting room hosting a nice table lamp. And we think it looks equally as fabulous without the glass. You could use just the cube as a pedestal to host a piece of art, a vase, or sculpture. Or simply as a smaller end table with no glass. Whatever way and wherever you choose… this awesome tessellated Mactan stone end table...
