Some information’s about pine wood: The pine, like spruce and fir, is one of the most widespread coniferous trees in Europe and belongs to the softwoods. The main distribution area is Northern Europe and Siberia, but the pine also grows in Southern Europe. The wood of the pine is resinous and darker than spruce or fir. Sapwood and heartwood differ in color. The sapwood is yellowish-white, the heartwood almost reddish-brown. We find pine wood in antique furniture of all epochs. It was always quite cheap and easy to get. The soft wood was easy to work with almost all tools. For the surface sealing of an unmounted pine furniture waxes and oils were available. The wood of the pine was used as solid wood for rural and simple furniture. For furniture with a noble veneer, pine served as the carrier wood for the veneer applied. Pine was also in demand as the base wood for framed furniture. In the course of its life, when the owner no longer liked the setting, the furniture was often painted over, stained or sanded down. Furniture with original settings is rare and absolutely worth preserving. A special feature of the pine family is the ornamental pine. The many ingrown, maroon branches give the wood an interesting structure. Antique, unframed pieces of furniture made of ornamental pine were mainly made in the Alpine region. The pine wood used at the time our antiques were created came from the region where the furniture was made.
