About the Item

We are pleased to present you, a French Directoire period Tric -Trac (Jeu de Jacquet) game table in mahogany and mahogany veneer. Practical removable and reversible top. One side serves as a small desk, and the reverse side of the table top serves as card tables. The top is removable revealing backgammon or " Jeu de Jacquet" board made of exotic wood with inlaid bone. Raised on four legs, ending in gilt-bronze hooves and castors. Gorgeous French Parisian Directoire period work, circa 1798 sign by Jacob Freres Rue Meslée. The table is in excellent condition, with new French polish. Dimensions: H 28.34 In. - W 44.88 In. - D 21.65 In. Jacob Freres Rue Meslée: Jacob Frères Rue Meslée was the stamp used by the brothers Georges II (1768-1803) and François-Honoré Jacob (1770-1841) from 1796-1803. The Jacob Frères most famous client was Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. She would have most likely seen the work of their father during the revolution in a progressive aristocrat's house. She used them to decorate various imperial residences, such as the Tuileries palace, and remained a loyal customer, using them almost exclusively, until her death. When Georges II (the elder brother) died in 1803, Georges came out of retirement to help the remaining son, François-Honoré (who changed his named to Jacob Desmalter) from a new partnership called Jacob Desmalter Et Cie. (stamped Jacob D. R. Mesleé, on two lines), which continued to be a influential supplier for the imperial period and is credited with helping to define the Empire style as it is known today. Tric-Trac Game: The backgammon is a board game which was very fashionable in France in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the court and in the aristocratic circles. It knew a revival during the Restoration before to disappear almost at late-19th century. It is a reasoned chance game such as the backgammon, which was known in France under the naming « Jeu de Jacquet.» The oldest treaty on the backgammon was written by Euverte Jollyvet, lawyer to the parliament of Paris, in 1634. The last treaty was published in 1852. Directoire Period: The Directory was a five-member committee which governed France during the later period of the French Revolution. It succeeded the Committee of Public Safety in November 1795 under the Constitution of the Year III, and it lasted until it was overthrown by Napoleon in November 1799 and replaced by the Consulate. This period is commonly known as the Directory Period.
