About the Item

Pair of stands with the Viardot stamp. Pair of stands, cherry marble top, open work belt and crossboard, resting on four curved legs. These stands bears the stamp of Gabriel Viardot. France, 19th century. Measures: Height 68 cm, diameter 45 cm (marble 35.5 cm). Gabriel Viardot began his career as a wood sculptor, sending some naturalistic decor furniture to the horticultural exhibition. He became the head of a small team of sculptors when he was only 19 years old. In 1853 he owns a factory and a furniture store located at 36 and 38 rue Rambuteau - Paris. At that time, he worked with his brother, Louis Gustave, under the name "Viardot Brothers and Company". In 1860 he founded his own workshop, "G. Viardot" at 5 rue du Grand-Chantier, and takes the management of the family business he held until 1872. He decided to devote himself to "Chinese-Japanese style furniture", that he saw at the 1867 Universal Exhibition. At the same exhibition, he is rewarded with four medals. With this production he is rewarded with the 1878 Universal Exhibition with a silver medal. He subsequently exercised successively at 15 rue de Thatch, at 3 rue des Archives in 1878 and at 36 rue Amelot at the turn of the century. His furniture was produced with lacquered and embossed panels sent directly from China or Japan and decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays from Tonkin. He enlivened his furniture with ornamental bronzes whose models were all from his hand. Over the years, the success did nothing to assert, including exhibitions of Nice and the 8th exposition of the Union Centrale des Arts De´coratifs in 1884. In 1885, he participated in the Universal Exhibition of 1885 in Antwerp, where he won a Gold Medal. At that time, the house employs 90 to 100 workers, sculptors or cabinetmakers, many of whom were trained by Gabriel Viardot. Following this exhibition, he was promoted to the rank of Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (December 29, 1885). He attended the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1889 and was rewarded with a Gold Medal. He gets the same reward for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
