About the Item

The craftsman of this fine little work table achieved perfect balance of proportions in his design, the heavy upper portion remaining remarkably light and airy against the much smaller legs. Utilizing a reeded X-stretcher with a mahogany veneered diamond to divide the open space, while also lending strength to the legs, the form is delicate and classy. Particularly attractive is the warm and well developed surface patination, mellowed from years of waxing and sun exposure to result in a deep and silky surface in very good condition throughout. The top is a solid plank of mahogany with a reeded edge, lifting over original brass hinges (these retaining most of their original hand cut and filed screws) to reveal a large storage space over a single drawer neatly divided out with compartments. It is finished on all sides, allowing it to sit more prominently anywhere in the room beside a chair or sofa. This is a precious piece preserved in almost entirely original condition. It is a perfect side table but just as easily is a fine statement piece in the hallway beneath a mirror or painting. For the collector of or decorator in classical English furnishings, this is a piece you will certainly cherish for a lifetime. Measurements: 12 1/2" D x 28 1/2" H x 19" W Condition Report: Finish is early but not original with centuries of waxing resulting in a warm and mellow patination. Minor scratches and scuffs to the top, minor surface wear throughout. Some repairs and losses to stringer inlay and other surface repairs. Retaining original knobs, locks, hinges, screws and castors - no key available. Overall exceptional condition and simply gorgeous.
