Oak Carpenter's and Joiner's Work Bench

About

This outstanding oak Joiner’s workbench is smaller than most. It is also less distressed than most, and while it bears all the scars of decades of purposeful use, it does not have the deep gouges, chops and multiple incisions found on most such pieces. The trestle-style base is made entirely of oak. The uprights are over 2” square, hand-cut and nicely chamfered on the corners, through-tenoned and pegged top and bottom to the heavier horizontal members. The trestles are joined by two 1.5”x4” stretchers, pulled tight on original wooden keys. The bench surface is comprised of a single oak slab, 16” deep over 2” thick. The 6” wide tool trough at the rear has an oak floor, where yellow pine is more usual is usual. The ends and vise faces are of 5”x3” beams of oak. This piece has two vises; a shoulder vise on the front and an end vise on the right side. Both are fully operational on removable wooden screws, which add 4” to the depth and 3.5” to the right hand side. This piece displays some handsome exposed hand-cut dovetails in the oak vise fronts. At 32” deep without the vise screw, it could be a side table, a sofa table, a server in a restaurant, or a magnificent TV console. It also functions extremely well as a bench in a home workshop.
