19th century carved angel painted lamp table, pedestal is a fantastic way to complete a seating group, display your favorite statuary or vase, or just stand alone thanks to its incredible hand-sculpted beauty! Many consider the work a depiction of a young Bacchus, because of the grapevine motifs around his head and waist. A charming angel forms most of the central support, appearing as a Caryatid which is a form dating back to ancient Greece and even before that epoch. The four scrolled naturalistic legs are lavished with fully laden grapevines, vines and foliates. The apron around the oval top is pierce-carved in the grandest traditions of the woodsculptor, with intaglio carvings appearing even on the top! Ancient painted finish has achieved a lovely patina over the past century,
circa 1880s.
