About the Item

A pedestal table by Carl Witzmann made of grey marble, a yellow metal stand, and a cast iron base. Carl Witzmann designed the 'Café Esplanade Zauner' in Bad Ischl, Austria, which opened in 1927. This table was part of that interior. The table is in original cleaned condition. The marble top has two chips and several scratches. About Carl Witzmann: Carl Witzmann (born September 26, 1883 in Vienna, died August 29, 1952 ibid) was an Austrian architect, interior designer and stage designer. Carl Witzmann, son of an innkeeper from Vienna-Erdberg, completed a carpentry apprenticeship and studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts in the architectural class of Hermann Herdtle and Josef Hoffmann from 1900 to 1904. He remained loyal to Hoffmann throughout his life. Witzmann started to work as a freelance architect in Vienna in 1901. He also taught at the School of Applied Arts Vienna from 1908 to 1915. He became a member of the Austrian and the German Werkbund. Witzmann served as a soldier in the First World War from 1915-1918. From 1919 to 1945 he was a professor at the School of Applied Arts Vienna, until 1923 in the subject of general forms, later as head of the Department of Interior Design and Furniture. One of his most significant works was the transformation of the theater in the Josefstadt after the model of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Witzmann was a busy life-time architect, who also designed furniture, carpets, lamps and other objects for the Wiener Werkstätte and renowned companies such as Thonet, Backhausen and Lobmeyr. After the 'Anschluss' of Austria to Nazi Germany, he mainly designed exhibition concepts and theater conversions for propaganda purposes. After the Second World War, Carl Witzmann was temporarily banned from work and although in 1948 was an associate professor, he retired later that year. Most recently, he worked as a freelance architect.
