19th Century Italian Scagliola and Marble Pedestal

About the Item

A fine example of an Italian antique process. The production of scagliola used since Roman times is a method of duplicating marble using natural crushed stone, plaster , bitumen and other materials baked hard and polished out. This pedestal in imitation of fine sienna marble, white marble and slate is a very good example. The whole is then topped with a thin slab of white marble. This form of pedestal is most associated with the late 18th and early 19th-century desire for classical elements and the display of busts and sculpture in long gallery fashion,
