This is a Liberty & Co. Hand-Carved Japonisme Taboret, JAPAN, c.1905.
This type of furniture was part of a collection commissioned by Liberty & Co. during the early 1900s, when there was a fashion for "Japonisme," which involved incorporating Japanese aesthetic principles into Western art and design. These tables and stools were hand-carved in Japan by fishermen and shipped to London in numbered sections for easy assembly at the company's "Eastern Bazaar" on Regent Street. They feature intricate floral motifs and are made from hardwood. Sturdy but scratches to flat surfaces, and wear to edges.
