Antique Inlaid Colonial Gothic Revival Teakwood & Stunning Brass Side Table 1910

About the Item

One of a kind and very special Gothic Style table from a former Dutch Colony. If you are looking for a beautiful antique sidetable to grace your living space then this fine specimen from the early 1900s could be perfect for you. This remarkable table is the first Colonial table in the Gothic Style that we have ever seen. To us therefor this unique table is a bit of an enigma as well, but that is exactly why we immediately knew we had to have it. We believe this Gothic table was made in Indonesia (a former Dutch colony). In 1863 the first Dutch missionary went to Indonesia and we believe that this piece must have been made for one of the churches or for one of the Dutch clergyman in Indonesia in the early 1900s. Mind you, some 86% of the people in Indonesia are Islamic so Indonesia only has a very small population of Christians. What we find extra charming about this Gothic table is that the way in which most of the Gothic elements have been made, have been done in the way an Indonesian would see and execute them. The quatrefoil symbols in the sides of this very rare table are the perfect examples of what we mean. They are quatrefoils, but not in the way a European furniture maker would ever create them. The Gothic arches underneath the quatrefoils are much more like they were made here in Europe and in the US (for example). Other elements that make this table so attractive are the top quality workmanship, inlaid brass hinges and 'lock plate'. They are of a quality and visual beauty that they will always draw people's attention. The final 'riddle' of this table are the inlaid and seemingly stylized letters in the table top. They are made of coromandel and they too have been inlaid (in the best possible manner) in the solid teakwood table top. At first we thought these letters could have something to do with the makers, then we thought they may have been letters / initials of the people to whom this table was presented, but finally we thought that probably these 'Indonesian Style' letters represent the first letters of the persons/parts of the trinity. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Because of the design, the quality of the make and the beauty of the materials, we believe this piece can only have been made by one of the top makers from that era. So if you are looking for truly unique Gothic antiques that tick all the boxes then maybe you should be the next custodian of this rare statement and talking piece. Mind you, our price for this unique and remarkable antique table includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days.
