Chinese Lacquered Money Chest, circa 1850

About the Item

Secured by brass latches, this elmwood money chest once safeguarded the finances and prized possessions of a Qing-dynasty household. Unlocked, the hinged top folds to an open storage area, while the double doors at the bottom reveal a divided cabinet. Unprotected storage is provided by a middle drawer. Rich in character, the once-glossy lacquered finish has weathered over time, leaving the chest with a genuine distressed appearance that’s often emulated for its rustic appeal.
