Bronze Etruscan Side Table Styled after Picasso by Philip & Kelvin Laverne
Located in New York, NY
This rare and highly sophisticated Etruscan Side/End Table in Bronze with Silvered Relief Tops After Picasso is signed by Philip and Kelvin Laverne originating from the United States, Circa 1960. Henry and Kelvin Laverne are highly regarded, and together designed and fabricated some of the most beautiful and sought after Mid-Century Furniture Pieces. Their goal was to make functional art, to which they succeeded in the highest degree. They marketed and sold their work to a highly discerning and elite international market, both during their period of production and as coveted vintage pieces. This table is part of their Etruscan Series, each featuring three dynamic flanges extending from the bronze support columns, meeting with the round base and underneath the tops, leaving cut out sections of negative space allowing for the passage of light and sculptural variation when viewed from different vantage points. The top is surrounded with a band of Patinated Bronze and Silvered Pewter. This patination is achieved uniformly over the surface of the piece by burying the pieces in earth, allowing for the bronze to chemically react in the most primal way possible, anchoring the tables materially to the historic and artistic references they draw upon in their designs and motifs. The surface of the table features a scene after the work of Picasso, a historical figure which Picasso and other artists have long explored as subject matter in order to explore narrative and bring contemporary understanding to ancient processes and divine actors...

'Lo Ta' Bronze Side Table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, c 1965, Double Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
For collectors of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, this incredible limited edition double-signed 'Lo Ta Hexagonal Cube' polychromed and etched bronze and pewter side table on casters is functional fine art created in the 1960s by New York father and son team. This design and motif is described by the LaVernes as "Lo Ta Hexagonal Cubes - Created in a limited edition, a trio of functional sculptures, each having an Oriental design sculpted on all sides. Burnished functional bronze surfaces complete the sculptures." This oh-so-gorgeous and oh-so-rare 'Lo Ta' side table features a similar motif to the 'Tao' and 'Su-Tao' series in patinated etched bronze and pewter containing hand applied polychrome with gorgeous artistic etchings of an Asian scenery depicting the panorama of life in ancient China with weeping willows, buildings and people in ancient formal garbs, with the top finished in intentionally-patinated acid washed bronze similar to the 'Classical' series, completed in the 1960s by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, a father and son American artisan team. Signed on two sides with Phillip and Kelvin LaVerne's signature. Resting on casters which allows for ease of relocation, and underside covered in a burnt orange colored felt. This rare, coveted, in-demand and sought-after occasional table is best described as a functional sculpture. Philip and Kelvin considered themselves artists, rather than furniture makers, and their gallery motto was "Works of Art". So for most of the collector and antique dealer world, we consider this a sculpture that can be used as a side table, end table, drinks table, bedside table, occasional table, tray table, TV-dinner table, laptop computer table great for Zoom meetings, writing and notes table, telephone table, lamp table, sculpture pedestal, or just as a stand-alone work of art. It is sturdy and structurally sound, and since the materials are of a strong and robust nature - it is absolutely suitable for every day use. But of course, if you prefer, you can place it in your room purely for viewing purposes, it is similar to any other piece of quality Fine Art that you would otherwise place on a museum wall. This incredible work of art still retains its original hand applied polychroming. Often this gets removed through vigorous over-cleaning and can affect its long term value. This table possesses all of its beautiful blue, green and orange polychroming and soft subtle patina throughout. An excellent and fine example for the distinguished connoisseur, collector or art and design investor. This 'Lo Ta' Chinoiserie side table by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne is an incredible option for the most discriminating client or collector. Consider for a Mid-Century Modern, Modern, Post-Modern or Contemporary home. Also an interesting addition of Juxtaposition in a French neoclassical, Traditional, Spanish, Transitional or Hollywood Regency room. Due to its formidable materials, this is suitable for residential or commercial use, perfect for any magazine-cover-worthy interior design project. DOCUMENTATION REFERENCE: Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Sculpture III, Paper Catalog, 1960s. Shown on page 37, description states, “LO TA HEXAGONAL CUBES - Created in a limited edition, a trio of functional sculptures each having an Oriental design sculpted on all sides. Burnished functional bronze surfaces complete the sculptures”. COMMON MISPELLINGS: Phillip and Kevin La...

Vintage, New and Antique Side Tables

While the range of styles and variety of materials have broadened over time, the priceless functionality of side tables has held true.

Vintage, new and antique side tables are an integral accent to our seating and provide additional, necessary storage in our homes. They can be a great foundation for that perfect focal piece of art that you want all your guests to see as you congregate for cocktails in the living room. Side tables are indeed ideal as a stage for your decorative objects or plants in your library or your study, and they are a practical space for the novel or stack of design magazines you keep close to your sofa.

Sure, owning a pair of side tables isn’t as imperative as having a coffee table in the common area, though most of us would struggle without them. Those made of metal, stone or wood are frequently featured in stylish interiors, and if you’re shopping for side tables, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

With respect to the height of your side tables, a table that is as high as your lounge chair or the arm of your couch is best. Some folks are understandably fussy about coherence in a living room area, but coherence doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t mix and match. Feel free to introduce minimalist mid-century modern wooden side tables designed by Paul McCobb alongside your contemporary metal coffee table. If you think it isn’t possible to pair a Hollywood Regency–style side table with a contemporary sofa, we’re here to tell you that it is. Even a leggy side table can balance a chunky sofa well. Try to keep a limited color palette in mind if you’re planning on mixing furniture styles and materials, and don’t be afraid to add a piece of abstract art to shake things up.

As far as the objects you’re planning to place on your side tables, if you have heavy items such as stone or sculptures to display, a fragile glass-top table would not be an ideal choice. Think about what material would best support your collectibles and go with that. If it’s a particularly small side table, along with a tall, sleek floor lamp, it can make for a great way to fill a corner of the room you wouldn’t otherwise easily be able to populate.

Whether you are looking for an antique 19th-century carved oak side table or a vintage rattan side table (because rattan never went away!), the collection on 1stDibs has you covered.
