About the Item

A very fine Chippendale period Pembroke table preserved in beautiful original condition, this exquisite gem is crafted of a dense Cuban mahogany in the primary surfaces throughout. This wood takes on a gorgeous polish and the patina has built up to a fine warm translucence throughout. Single solid planks of mahogany are used for the wings and top, each with grain flowing from one plank into the next. The thumb-molded edge follows the curvature of the shaped leaves, these raising over wings that tuck into the apron and swing outward on knuckle-joints to create a firm table surface. From either side a drawer slides easily in and out of the frame, these withdrawn with the original fire-gilt bronze handles; each drawer is crafted with crisp hand-dovetailing in the oak secondary woods. They retain one working key. Note the attention to detail throughout: the gentle chamfering of the interior of each leg to allow the lines to be softened and to emphasize delicacy; the crisp pierced bracket returns inside of the legs on either side hint at the profile used to edge the corners of the tabletop. The bottom of the feet are incised with a now nearly invisible ankle line. This exquisite piece is a fine acquisition for any passionate collector of the classics. Entirely pure and beautifully preserved with only minimal repairs over the years, it is a powerful strike point for the classical interior.
