Manufactory of A. Lemoine, Boulle or Napoleon III, Sewing Table, 1850s

About

Manufactory of André Lemoine, Boulle or Napoleon III. Sewing Table, 1850s. Made of ebony. Curved sabre legs in fine sabots. Appliqué, antique figures of gilded bronze on the legs. Very richly inlaid table frame with geometric ornamentation and floral patterns on all sides; the inlays are made of brass and tortoiseshell. Rich key shield in the shape of a rocaille with mascaron. Very rich inlaid tabletop with surrounding frieze. The tabletop is hinged, inside there is a mirror. Best quality! The sewing table was made in the manufactory of André Lemoine: Lemoine owned workshops in the Rue de Tournelles in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. During the time of the July Monarchy, André Lemoine began a collaboration with the furniture dealer and table-maker Louis-Édouard Lemarchand (1775-1872), whose workshop and sales rooms he took over completely in 1852. Lemoine commemorated the initial period of their cooperation by leaving the name of Lemarchand in his brand stamp, even after taking over the business alone. A good decade later, from 1863, André's son Henri took over the management of the workshop. It was owned and managed by the Lemoine family until 1893, when it was resold by Henri. André Lemoine acquired an excellent reputation as a cabinetmaker whose special attention to quality and craftsmanship of his furniture was highly appreciated by his customers. He not only specialized in one type of furniture, but also created secretaries, tables, beds, cupboards, chests of drawers, etc. In particular, precious woods such as walnut, mahogany, rosewood or, for individual marquetries, exotic wood species from Asia were used. He was also represented with several pieces of furniture at the Exposition Universelle in 1855. (Research and text: Art historian Jens J. Reinke, M.A.).
