About

We designed the occasional table, entitled DeStijl "Intersections", to be a functional piece of fine art that embodies the work of Gerritt Rietveld, particularly the “Red and Blue Chair”, and the Neo-Plasticism Movement of 1918 in the Netherlands. The table is a bench made hand joined piece of functional sculpture made from Richlite Black Diamond, which is made from 100% recycled FSA certified paper; Plyboo, which is made from sustainable bamboo; and low VOC coatings and adhesives. The interaction between the positive and negative space, the opposing and complementary angles of the base elements and inlay on the top, as well as the contrasting colors of various components, combine to create a dynamic and expressive work of functional art. This exact table has been sold, but a similar custom designed table can be fabricated to order whereby the colors and materials could be altered. Year work was completed: 2016 Form: Occasional table Materials: Hard maple, black diamond richlite, and Plyboo. Construction: The four legs are tenoned into the top, the four feet are tenoned into the legs, the RichLite Black Diamond legs are laminated, some of the Plyboo legs and diagonals are mitered and blind splined, the diagonal elements are dadoed into the legs, and there are six layers of a moderately low VOC varnish. Size: Length 24” x width 24” x height 28”.

Mosart, Inc.

View Profile
As a wooden artifacts conservator, lecturer, and furniture scholar treating and studying furniture throughout the world’s history for over 30 years; a new age of creativity and design inspiration has blossomed forth. Mosart’s designs and their material usage strive to combine the forms, decorative treatments, and hand joinery utilized by the great craftsman of the past with the LEED Building and Green Practices of the 21st century. The decoration and sculptural elements used in our furniture derive their inspiration from the art movements and artists of the late 19th and 20th centuries including “Abstract Expressionism”, “Abstract Illusionism” Cubism, Constructivism, and Neo-Plasticism. Mosart is striving to elevate furniture back to an art form while also designing and building furniture that employs the use of recycled, up-cycled, and LEED certified materials. The furniture produced by Mosart are individual titled works of art that employ many traditional decoration techniques including gilding, carving, inlaying, and mosaic work. The furniture often incorporates “old stock” exotic and domestic wood and wood from naturally downed trees in its production. In our furniture, we are essentially painting and sculpting with wood where the juxtaposition of elements, the color, variance in grain, and the refractive qualities of the wood are used as an artist uses paint from his pallet or sculptural elements to create a piece for functional fine art.
