About the Item

Sculptural centre or side table in Brazilian rosewood by Eugène Printz (1889-1948) France 1920s. Signed “E. PRINTZ” on underside. Parisian decorator and furniture designer Eugène Printz (1889-1948) grew up working at his father’s workshop on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Trained as craftsman from an early age, the adult Printz developed a legendary technical prowess, relishing the mastery of difficult techniques, such as integrating wood and metal components, or working with challenging materials such as palm wood. Printz opened his own workshop on rue Saint-Bernard. His approach to designing individual pieces was that of a practitioner, usually working with models at 1/10 scale rather than with drawings. The cardboard miniature would be reworked until perfected, and then executed in his workshop under his exacting surveillance, most likely receiving a few further improvements along the way. Material wise, his work was notable for the integrating of metal with wood and his disinterest in more bourgeois types of wood in favor of walnut and Brazilian rosewood, or exotics such as ebony and kekwood. Beginning in 1926, Printz exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon d’Automne, presenting original pieces that combined curved and straight lines and the complex interplay between materials. The themes of his work evolved from taught geometrics in the late 1920s, to African influences circa 1930, to Baroque and other influences after, but the desire to create entire interiors using innovative and meticulously crafted pieces of his own design remained constant. One of the best known examples of his work is a sitting room the Musée des Colonies (now the Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie) at the Port Dorée for 1931 Exposition Coloniale, which included a suite of furniture featuring Printz’s signature bravado use of palm wood and lacquer, and bold and innovative forms. This table speaks to Printz’s interest in African forms, his exacting use of materials, and a love of geometrics and their ability create interesting silhouettes.
