Sculptural Frederik Stærmose Side Table, Hand Decorated Tile Top, Denmark, 1930s
About the Item
This very rare side table was designed and executed by master carpenter Frederik Stærmose in Odense, Denmark in the 1930s. The table is marked with a metal manufacturer's tag on the underside of the top.
The table top is marked by its striking, carved edge, shaped with a rhythmic profile that reflects the maker’s high level of craftsmanship. It is decorated with nine hand-decorated tiles of glazed earthenware burnt at Herman A. Kähler's factory in Næstved, Denmark. The middle tile features a cowhorn-painted motif of two cocks, while the remaining tiles display cowhorn-painted motifs of abstract flowers. The motifs are likely designed by Jens Thirslund or after his presentation.
Both the top and the four elegantly turned legs are made of stained beech wood. The legs are finely shaped with subtle variations in turning, lending the table a refined character and demonstrating the cabinetmaker’s attention to detail.
The table is in good, original condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. It is stable and ready for placement and can be used normally. The table is suitable for everyday use (e.g. a lamp or decorative objects), though we recommend avoiding excessive weight and handling it with care when moving.
Provenance:
The table was gifted to the previous owner by Svend & Annimi Holst Schmidt. Annimi was the co-author of the book "Kähler og Keramikken"
Other Danish cabinetmakers working in the same era include Frits Henningsen, Peder Moos, Jacob Kjær, Ole Wanscher and Niels Vodder.
