A series of side tables, Explorer 1, 2 and 3 inspired by the playful and what remind one of jelly-beans, rounded sweets that that children eat in the US. This childlike inspiration has at the same time a very elegant beauty. It’s about new shapes, different objects within the market that want to convert into emblematic pieces because these tables are not only functional but sculpturally strong. Lacquered fibreglass body. Solid turned wooden legs and lacquered. Painted glass tabletop. Explorer family BD Barcelona Design The collaboration between Jaime Hayon and BD Barcelona Design started 15 years ago. Since, we have developed a ton of designs and variations together divided into three large collections: Showtime, Gardenias and Explorer. The Explorer family is the most recent. Before the forced lockdown due to the pandemic, which is still affecting us today, we presented a ‘starter’ to this new collection – a series of three side tables called Explorer 1, 2 and 3. So far, these have had comercial success. This may be because they remind one of jelly-beans, rounded sweets that children eat in the United States. “This childlike inspiration, has at the same time a very elegant beauty which generally is characterised in my designs. It’s about new shapes, different objects within the market that want to convert into emblematic pieces because these tables are not only functional but sculpturally strong”, explains Hayon. About the designer Born in Madrid in 1974, Jaime Hayon boasts one of the most glittering careers in the recent history of contemporary design. Hayon forged his identity as a designer at Benetton’s Fabrica communications research centre, near Treviso, where he worked under Oliviero Toscani. He first arrived in 1997, and soon after was put in charge of the design department. He first worked with BD on the Mail Me project while at Fabrica. In 2004, Hayon branched out on his own, settling in Barcelona and working on a number of projects while also exhibiting his more personal work. His exhibition Mediterranean Digital Baroque at London’s David Gill Gallery, plus the ArtQuitect bathroom collection, marked the beginnings of his international recognition. This way followed by the Showtime collection for BD and subsequent work with companies including Metalarte, Camper, Lladró, Bisazza, Swarovsky, and Moooi. Hayom currently lives and works in Valencia.
