About the Item

A complex little stand, this raised teapoy box is an object designed to conveniently store and protect household tea. As a high value commodity of importance in a proper English household of the period, it was necessary to control the access to teas and spices in the home and make sure they were rationed according to the budget of the home. Teapoys and tea caddies were found in most homes during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The overall composition of this piece is particularly pleasing though, having been finely inlaid and embellished with intricate graduations of beaded molding throughout, the interior being of impeccable craftsmanship and the overall form remaining light and unimposing. The rectangular top features a raised central panel framed with beaded molding around an inlaid star of alternating ebony and satinwood inlays, the lower edges of the lid bevelled. It lifts over original brass hinges to reveal a handsomely fitted interior with two rectangular wells on either side flanking circular wells with very crisply carved lids; all aspects of the interior are entirely original. The carcass of the teapoy is crafted with glowing mahogany veneers, the lower edge finished with an enlarged beaded molding, the entire box raised over a tapering column affixed to the underside with a bevelled brace retaining it's original steel screws. The column sinks through the triform base with large tenons, surrounded at the joint with large carved teardrop molding. The entire table rests over neat bun feet. A piece like this serves quite nicely today as an occasional table, presenting with equal beauty when opened and closed. Measurements: 18 1/4" W (toe to toe) x approximately 17" D x 31 1/4" H Condition report: Lid with minor veneer loss to front right corner and old age crack in the bevelled edge. Some base beading losses. Minor abrasions and cracking to veneer throughout. Retaining all original lids, hinges, lock and lining - no key. Early but not original finish under shellac and wax.
