  • Small Georgian Mahogany Sofa Table
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Sofa Table, Of Rare Diminutive Proportions, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Having Drop Flap To Each End, Over One Long Drawer & One False Drawer To Reverse With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Square End Supports With Elegant High Stretcher And Four Sabre Legs Terminating On Original Brass Castors. This chamring little sofa table is of really unusual size, the kind of proportions which we have rarely come across before, but those proportions are absolutely great for both function and elegance. It is just about small enough to not dominate the centre of a room, or even to just tuck into a corner, whilst at the same time retaining a little presence. Sofa tables were relatively commonly found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself. Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture. As with all of our items this georgian mahogany sofa table...
