Superb English Regency Satinwood Sofa Table, circa 1810

About the Item

Refined and elegant in every way, this superb Regency sofa table is crafted with the coveted, hard to acquire and expensive satinwood. Most often used in stringer inlay and in veneers due to the sheer cost of the unusual plank, the majority of surfaces in this table are actually crafted in the solid of pure planks. Both drop leaves are singular solid planks with vibrant swirling grains, each raising over a pair of curved wings that swing outward over knuckle joints to firmly support the leaves. The top is reeded along the outer edges of the solid, precisely crafted with what would appear to be planks taken from the same log. Laid out perpendicular to the viewer, the top shows repeating swirling grains with gorgeous symmetry. It projects just slightly over an apron hosting a pair of drawers on one side opposed by a pair of faux drawers on the reverse. Each drawer and faux drawer is outlined in ebony pigment and has centrally situated a single original stamped brass knob. The drawers are crisply hand dovetailed with great skill and a resulting tightness - each moves in and out of the apron with ease. Two shaped balusters with vivid vertical rays of grain raise the top, these locked into the pine secondary wood behind the drop leaves of the apron in double pinned tenon-mortise joints. A pair of sabre legs lock into each baluster with large slotted dovetails, the gentle klismo terminating in acanthus cast brass sabots over original brass caster wheels. The ring turned stretcher between the legs ensures a firm and long lasting structure. An unusually sophisticated and costly work during the period, this piece exhibits a degree of precision and attention to line that is most moving. It remains in outstanding original condition, a precious strikepoint piece for the Classical living rooms.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Old refinish in gorgeous condition, beautiful silky surface with only minor blemish. All hardware original, some screws replaced. Old cracks and light ripple to leaves. Very sturdy and strong. We have additional images available upon request.
