Antique 19th Century Austrian Bankers or Merchants Table in Warm Honey Color

About the Item

This beautiful bankers table or merchants table originates in Austria and dates circa 1780. The table was completely made of fruitwood. It has slightly tapered legs that are joined by a cross stretcher below. The table has a warm honey color finish with a soft gloss. The table shows many marks, dents, and wormholes throughout but has a solid structure. However there were no signs of active woodworm, the piece was professionally treated for the woodworm as a precaution. The table has been used intensively throughout the years. The distressed look and built-up patina add great character to the table. This is a typical merchant's table given its size and sliding top. The size created a certain distance between the person paying and the recipient. The payment would go in the compartment below the top and then the top would slide open towards the recipient. The money was put in the compartment so the amount being paid was private. The table has been cleaned and repaired in our workshop. The legs underneath the stretcher were renewed because the old ones were in a bad condition. Some stains on the top were removed and the old wax layers were slightly heated and buffed. It now has a beautiful soft gloss and great patina. Structurally the table is in very good condition. A new protective wax coat was applied.
