This coffee table is made with hot rolled steel and repurposed steel tube legs. The legs were previously painted however the artist sandblasts them and maintains a majority of the paint to add to the industrial aesthetic of the piece. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. Florence Knoll (1917) was trained as an architect and had a sense of style from a very young age. During her school time at Cranbrook, Eliel Saarinen (then the headmaster) and his family included her in their family. In 1936 she met Alvar Aalto and was trained by Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius and (as if the long list of eminent designers is not long enough) Mies van der Rohe. This meant that although she was barely out of her teens, she was educated by the best of the European modernists. When she arrived in New York she worked on interior projects (being the only female) which is how she came to know Hans Knoll. When Florence joined Knoll, the planning unit started. This timeless table is in good to excellent condition and we date it from the 1960's. This fine specimen stands as strong and stabile as the day it was made and its heavy weight and relatively wide base also ads to that stability. Thanks to its white color and natural and calm decoration of black veins a piece like this can be used in all types of interiors and in a wide variety of color schemes. It never seizes to amaze us how people manage to create such beautiful shapes out of materials that are naturally very 'unwilling to cooperate'.
