Double Drawer Changer Table, Switzerland 17th Century
Exceptional Swiss changer table with two drawers in Larch and Alder dating from the early 17th century. The plateau in Alder is based on a double base cross larch joined by a wide cross keyed. A large and a small drawer slide on both sides of the board, they were used for exchange currencies keeping a safe distance. "Woodworking, the choice of species and the method of construction, the changer table is associated with the work of huchiers from Switzerland and southern Germany. The use of alder wood has a symbolic value inherited from Middle Ages: to the trade of money, reproved by the Church, is reserved the use of a wood that seems to have "partly linked with the devil" (Michel Pastoureau) This table was on display in the center of a Belgian collection of contemporary art. Witness of the emergence of the first bankers, she has an extraordinary presence.
