"LTR" Occasional Table by Charles Eames

About

Charles and Ray Eames kept several of these "LTR" tables at the famous Eames House in Los Angeles, where they served a wide variety of functions. At parties held there in the 'fifties, the guests would sit on the floor, Japanese-style, each with an LTR supporting their cup of tea. The LTR -- Low Table, Rod (base) -- is a small and very sturdy table, well-suited for supporting potted plants, cocktails, or pieces of ethnographic sculpture. Not only a versatile side table, it can also be a low stool (no need to worry about the weight of your houseguest; four of these tables can support an elephant or even a medium-sized piece of earth-moving equipment). This example is an early one, dating from the mid-1950s. At that time, the tops were not made with plywood, but with strips of solid wood laminated side-by-side, and then covered with either wood veneer or a very durable composite in either white or black. Both the top and zinc-plated steel base of this LTR are in lovely condition.
