This classic and highly sought-after collectors item is a 'Chan' cocktail table by father and son team, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, handmade in the 1960s. Ingeniously designed with acid etching and patinated polychrome bronze and pewter, this circular coffee table features an octagonal base beneath a circular top etched with Chinoiserie motifs. This unique example is double-signed by the LaVerne's - two separate sets of signatures etched on the table's surface as can be seen in the photos. Prime example for a fine art and design collector or interior designer looking for the best of the best for their client.
The "Chan" Chinoiserie scene depicts Asian figures and horses in a walled compound set amidst arbors of wisteria and willow. The clever use of contrasting surfaces and textures is most unusual and add dimension to the exotic scene. It stands on an octagonal bronze base with contrasting inset panels.
This round coffee table by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
