About the Item

Walnut table with "lentil" legs. Probably Guadalajara, Spain, 17th century. Original wrought iron lock and key. Probably Guadalajara, Spain, Europe. Four legs with lenticular turning and joined with smooth chambranas serve as base to the table, with wide skirts with a drawer that closes with key, decorated this with rectangular moldings. The board protrudes slightly from the sides, and is reinforced by two crossbars topped by ball rooms. Typologically, it is the characteristic model of the popular tables of the time, to which, sometimes, they are also called "game tables". Walnut wood was one of the most used for Spanish furniture, because of its density, its strength and hardness and, above all, because it is an autochthonous tree and quite common then. The absence of bronzes, polychromy or dorados focuses on the high quality of the material and on the harmony of the whole. The lack of decorative elements responds to its manufacture in a local center, away from the riches of the main cities of the 17th century. The baroque detail that presents are the turned of the legs, realized on the basis of equal discs denominated "lentils" or qualified like lenticulares. It was normal in this type of furniture to maintain some characteristic of previous artistic styles: the simple rectangular moldings that decorate the fronts respond more to Renaissance examples than to the corresponding ones of the century of manufacture of the table; The lateral crosses finished in quarter of sphere also are common in pieces previous to the date of the piece; fixing the front of the drawer with the sides with dovetails is a working technique of wood that is already seen in Gothic examples. The only decorative hardware is centered on the clasp: the lock shield is shaped like a vase topped by a flower and the area is completed by placing it on a wrought iron plate with very stylized vegetable stems. To emphasize the dark tone of the material was placed like background a red cloth, very common in the Spanish furniture from the Average Age. The key has the ring decorated with two ovals, a very simple fillet, a smooth stem and the notched palette, as it corresponds to an original piece of the 17th century. In spite of being very common pieces in the Baroque, we have nowadays only a few tables similar to this one, for being works of type more utilitarian than ornamental. However, similar tables are preserved in numerous private collections and in places such as the National Museum of Decorative Arts (Madrid), the Casa de Cervantes Museum (Valladolid), the Museo del Greco (Toledo), etc. Size: 57 x 56 x 71 cms.
