Fine Late 19th Century Two-Tier Tea Table by Paul Sormani
About the Item
A fine late 19th century gilt bronze-mounted Louis XV style two-tier tea table.
By Paul Sormani.
The oval upper tier surmounted by an bronze framed removable glass tray held to each side by a scrolled berry hung vine and laurel garland support. The lower quarter veneered top with molded surround, the frieze centered by a berry finial and with acanthus baluster handle to each side. The cabriole legs headed by clasps and ending in acanthus wrapped hoof sabots.
Upper bronze rim signed P. Sormani, Paris.
Paul Sormani (1817-1877) was born in Venice in 1817 and was a maker of fine 'meubles de luxe'. His work was described in the catalogue of the 1867 Exposition Universelle as: 'toute sa production re´ve`le une qualite´ d'exe´cution de tout premier ordre'.
Sormani exhibited in Paris in 1849, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1878 and 1900 and in London in 1862, winning numerous medals. Amongst the items Sormani exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle were a Louis XV style bureau and a Louis XVI style commode both based on originals held in the Jones Collection at the South Kensington Museum.

Paul Sormani
Paul Sormani, counted among the most elite Parisian ébénistes of the 19th century, used the foundation of Louis XV and XVI styles for his meubles de luxe (luxurious furnishings).
Sormani received enormous attention as one of Paris’ finest and most influential ébénistes and earned worldwide acclaim by displaying his pieces at many of the world’s leading exhibitions. At the 1867 Exhibition Universelle in Paris the celebrated designer received an award and was described in the exhibition journal as “...a distinguished ébéniste of Paris, whose works deservedly attracted the attention of the public, and received the marked approval of the connoisseur.”
Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, decorated her palaces with beautiful creations by Paul Sormani whose designs were of a select few favored by the Empress. Revivals of Louis XV and XVI pieces were in high demand among affluent Parisians, and Sormani created many of the finest and most important furnishings of the period.
