Multicolor vertical stripes abstract geometric modern color field oil painting. The painting (similar to the work of Gene Davis and other Washington Color School artists), was proudly displayed in the living room of a Classic Mid-Century Modern house designed by a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Oil on canvas painting is signed Erik 74 on reverse also inscribed Erik Pitsokos. Measures 49 inches high,47.5 inches wide. Frame measures 51 inches high, 49.5 wide. In good condition. From St. Petersburg Times - Sept. 12, 1975: The Greek-born sculptor Erik Pitsokos received his art education in Greece, Italy and Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1964 and became a Canadian citizen. In Canada he had an art school adjacent to his studio where he took only accomplished artists for highly advanced instruction in the finer points of sculpture. His entry at the International symposium of Arts held in Washington, D.C. in 1969 won him the first award for sculpture. He exhibited throughout Canada and his works have been donated to the purchased by individuals, galleries, public buildings and schools in Canada. John Link (d. 2021) worked as a professor of art at Western Michigan University. From the artisit: "When I was in philosophy, my fellow grad students agreed that we were in philosophy because we couldn’t do anything else. But the same can be said of art. My problem with philosophy was that it requires you to stay still to read, and that bothered me a lot. I also found art to be the antithesis of philosophy. I was told I should study all the great aestheticians because I made a lot of paintings. I told the department head that those people were talking about something other than making art. I did not exactly know what, but art has a kinaesthetic element, both mental and physical, that philosophy does not. Nor is art all that contemplative. You must work your way through a murky soup of possibilities, and all that stuff. Then I flunked the draft physical and did not have to stay in philosophy, so I started taking art classes. Philosophy, understood as wonderment, is a good place to begin, certainly. English was my worst subject in high school and grade school, math and science my best. When I went to college I was supposed to be an engineer. But I took up English because I thought college was a place where you worked on your weaknesses. Visionary, abstract original acrylic on aluminum painting by famous NASA Space Artist, Andreas Nottebohn, titled "KNM 1387" depicts a colorful, otherworldly scene on a shimmering sheet of scored metal. This incredible celestial painting frees the viewer from a one dimensional perspective by suggesting a vast and mysterious distance. Information on the back of the painting states, “KNM 1387 Spec 1 of 48 similar original paintings 1996 30 x 24 Acrylic on Aluminum”. Hand signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Very nicely custom framed in a transitional style black frame with wide silver inner lining. Framed, the painting measures approximately 35" high x 29" wide x 2" deep. Unframed painting measures approximately 30" high x 24" wide. One of the key innovators of metal painting, Nottebohm creates what might be called sculptures on a flat plane. By removing microscopic layers from the metal surface, he transforms the material into patterns of shimmering light. The unusual luminous quality of Nottebohm's work comes from the aluminum surfaces he scores, using a variety of manual and machine tools. Aluminum can create light and movement that you cannot create with anything else. It is similar to the sun reflecting on water, and you see one painting from one side and another painting from another side.
