About the Item

Ulrich Schmitt, born in 1959, studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich (Academy of Fine Arts Munich) where he was a master student of Professor Gerd Winner from 1981-1989. The artist won a DAAD travel scholarship to study for one year under John Hilliard at Camberwell College of Art in London. Ulrich Schmitt has been working as an artist with the medium photography since 1988. His very first exhibition took place at the Goethe Institute in New York in 1988. He has been exhibiting regularly ever since. His work can be seen in public collections in Germany and Austria. Since 2015 Ulrich Schmitt has been regularily exhibiting at the AIPAD Photography Show New York. The artist lives and works in Munich and teaches at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. This work is a unique piece from the artist's series " Photographic Chemistry ". In this series, he converts black and white baryta prints into valuable, vivid colored ones by means of toning with his excellent knowledge of this rare 19th century technology. The print is a silver-gelatine-print, toned with lead and iron. The frame is made out of oakwood and museum glass.
