Jack Youngerman Aubusson Tapestry

About the Item

Stunning Mid-Century tapestry designed by Jack Youngerman and entitled "Blackout". Woven at Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh Tapestry Co.,Scotland in 1971. A Gloria F. Ross tapestry and once part of the famed Max Palevsky art collection. The artist's initials are woven into the tapestry as well as signed on the reverse label. Lauded by Gloria F. Ross as one of her "signature tapestries", Blackout is a superb example of Jack Youngerman's simple, yet powerful imagery. Drawn to "bilateral symmetry", Youngerman's command of color and composition reference both Henri Matisse's late cut-outs and the natural, symmetrical forms explored by Georgia O'Keeffe. However, in its own visual language, Blackout bursts beyond any natural reference compelling the viewer to focus on the synthesis of bold colors on a uniform surface.
