About the Item

Louesa Roebuck studied print making at RISD and moved to California during the El Nino of 1997-1998 and began working at Chez Panisse, having little to no idea the power of the transformative community she’d entered. She continued her education of Californian culture and beauty working closely with Erica Tanov, and then went on to open August, a seminal and before-it’s-time fashion, art, and community hug. August was an early proponent of the intersection of luxury apparel and socially responsible textile practices. She lost the business during the worldwide economic crash of 2008/09, and returned to her lifelong love of foraged and gleaned floral work, which has been one of her recent mediums of choice, with the fall 2016 release of Forged Flora (Ten Speed Press: Random House) She fell madly in love with the land and sea of West Marin and spent over a decade immersed and observing those lands. She also takes great joy in painting Monotypes which reflect her deep love and endless curiosity of California landscapes and are rooted in the sacredness of place. She also collaboratively designs textiles acts as creative director of Neem. Louesa considers all of California her home, and happily divides her time between the Bay Area and Los Angles, and currently lives in Ojai. She’s created floral installations for Vivienne Westwood, John Baldesarri, Tod Selby, Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Rintaro, and Carolyn Murphy for Vogue and House Beautiful. Her floral work has been featured in a number of national and international magazines and media, including Vogue, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, Cabana, Los Angeles Times C Magazine, Edible Selby, Remodelista, Bare Journal, Sunset, Martha Stewart Living, Beekman Almanac. Process "I paint on a 9 foot long x 3 foott wide glass “table” with water based and nontoxic pigments, water based “oils”, gauche, watercolor pigments, walnut and sumi inks, olive oil and ash are some of the pigments employed. I’m fascinated by the relationship and mystery of water and oil. I then lay a variety of printmaking papers on the glass and proceed with hand rubbing, again the hand rubbing results in more surprise and mystery. After an intuitively decided period of time I “Pull” the print, and let dry in the desert air. I never know which bits of my painting will be transferred to paper. Each print is singular and completely unique, hence the term Monotype."
