Measures: 22 5/8” x 22 5/8” Oil on canvas. From Artist: Dear Reader, To recount my earliest exposure to the world of painting I begin with my maternal grandfather, James Jackson. He was born in Piedras Negras and was a Scottish resident of Mexico City in the 1920's, who later with my grandmother and their five children worked as a lawyer in Laredo, TX. By all accounts he spent most of his time painting. He generated copies of Impressionist and post-Impressionist oil paintings. Our families have hundreds of his oil reproductions: Gauguin, Matisse, Vlaminck, Modigliani, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Rouault, Leger and more. We also have his vast collection of plein air watercolors along with sculptures and a library of books and folios from which he made his copies. He sold none of them. I did not know him. He died in 1966. I was born in 1969. You might guess that growing up with these paintings would impart to me a deep understanding of art and painting. This is true, to the extent that I absorbed an appreciation for and basic knowledge of art. However, just as listening to music will not show you how to play musical instruments, living with these paintings did not show me how to paint. I had to work at it, just as my grandfather worked to master his craft. From my sophomore year onward, I attended Alamo Heights High school in San Antonio. In 1988 I was given awards for my art and offered scholarships to art schools in Chicago, Boston, and Savannah, but my resources were inadequate to take advantage of these opportunities. Instead (and with no small amount of gratitude) I enrolled at The University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993. I had the good fortune during the last two years of my studies to work in the photography archives at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. The benefits of this experience went far beyond gaining an understanding of the history of photography. I took a deep dive into the world of image making, which tracks with various movements of art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After receiving my degree in 1993 I became a land surveyor for a year. Finding myself becoming increasingly restless, with minimal preparation I loaded all my belongings into a truck and drove to Kansas City, Missouri. There I befriended and collaborated with some truly gifted painters and musicians. Many of them had attended the Kansas City Art Institute. This particular scene is noteworthy because it was inexpensive and had great resources in terms of museums, libraries, and community. I found a job there restoring antiques and building furniture. After five years in Kansas City, in 1999 I took an epic road trip on a Stump Jumper bicycle loaded with 80lbs of gear. Leaving from San Antonio, I rode to Portland, Oregon, working odd jobs along the way with extended stays in Santa Fe, San Francisco, Napa Valley, and Calistoga. Twenty-five hundred miles and five months later I returned with sixty watercolors. Returning to Austin I ran a furniture shop (owned by two friends from school) for six years, then opened my own workshop. Austin Woodwright has been my studio since 2006. The shop provides resources for painting as well as for building furniture and sculpture. The sacrifice of reliable income (from furniture restoration) that I have made to produce art is beginning to bear fruit, as every year I paint better. In 2019 I married Caroline McCarter. She is a yoga therapist working towards a doctorate. With a nod to her remarkable eye for color, she is not an artist -- which is very good, since this partnership is best with only one distractible idealist who might forget some practical details necessary to life’s navigation. Reading over this short biography, there is more I could say about influential family members and friends who all have creative talents. I have left out many stories, discoveries, and observations. Omitted are two painting sojourns to Iceland. Brevity serves us for now. My sights are set on the next decade as I hope to build upon a solid body of work. The next paintings will be built upon years of experimentation and study, and they will be my best works. Robert Wymer 7/19/2021.
