About

Purvis Young (1943-2010) was an acclaimed artist living and working in the Overtown section of Miami. He was discovered as a street artist painting on found material and adhering them to a wall in the rundown neighborhood. After his discovery his work became praised and in demand. This painting is done on an irregular panel of masonite that he found. It has some of his hallmark images of horses and rounded head forms as if they were watching. Many of his works speak of the African American experience and his neighborhood. Purvis Young's art is represented in many museums including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum, High Museum, National Museum of American Culture and Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the American Folk Art Museum.
