Teal, Cream, and Tan Ceramic Chain-link Wall Sculpture by Taylor Kibby

Estimated Production Time6-7 weeks

About

This wall sculpture balances the strength and delicacy of its materiality through the lush draping of seemingly fragile ceramic links. Each is individually assembled, by the artist, into a vast weaving of ceramic rings to create tactile and kinetic works of art. The movement of color over the piece echo the larger form, and for Kibby were inspired by the small drawing swatches that are used in traditional weaving to indicate the pattern of the tapestry. The teal, cream, and tan clay bodies are lushly saturated; they recall colors found in the forest and desert where Kibby often retreats to connect with the quiet so vital to the meditative quality of her practice. Centered on creating objects that encourage tactile engagement, Taylor's process is about experience and awareness. Inspired by traditional chainmail construction and tapestry, Kibby works by creating a flexible system and then subjecting the sculpture to both predictable and unpredictable change. This experimentation creates unique movement and one-of-a kind objects. The object's size and draping is unique to each installation.

Taylor Kibby lives and works in Los Angeles,CA. Coming from a culinary background, Taylor Kibby uses the knowledge and discipline of working with her hands as the foundation of her practice. Aligning with ideas centered on the blurring of lines between craft and fine art, Taylor Kibby makes work centered on experience and awareness. Through rigorous application of technique and the subsequent surrender to an unravelling of structure, she seeks to explore ideas of narrative in connection with the way objects share space and embody identity. The context of her work is deeply influenced by tactile making, thinking, and learning. In 2018 she received her Master of Fine Art in Applied Craft and Design from a joint program between Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, OR. Deeply influenced by the sun drenched vistas of her Southern California childhood, Taylor's work is a blend of high style, the sensual, and the slightly strange. Inspired by traditional chainmail construction and tapestry, Kibby works by creating a flexible system and then subjecting the sculpture to both predictable and unpredictable change. This experimentation creates unique movement and one-of-a kind objects.
