Untitiled: (No Trace - 2009 -2010 ) Big Sur Basin Fire

About the Item

The diptych painting Untitiled: (No Trace - 2009 -2010 ) is an artwork inspired and created during the Big Sur basin fire in 2009. The image of burned patterns of ancient redwood trees consumed by fire... The title refers to the Zen Mind – No trace of realization remains, and this no trace continues endlessly ... Diptych - Tar on Canvas 2 panels 108 X 96” John Colao lives and works in Los Angeles arriving from New York in the mid-eighties. Though originally involved in advertising and editorial photography, his work expanded to include fine art photography, documentary film and painting. Primary to Colao’s artwork is subject driven imagery, whether portraits which are spontaneous and originating in the subject, landscapes that reflect the ephemeral synchronicity between light, shape and color specific to a particular space. His portraits of William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg in the last year of their lives, were included in the William S. Burroughs Retrospective exhibited at the Robert Berman Gallery and Track 16 at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica CA. His documentary film projects include the film “Memphis is in Egypt: A Portrait of Charles Lloyd the great tenor saxophonist and his quartet. Colao traveled with the group over a three year period, touring throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The film premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in 1996. Colao’s focus into fine art began in the mid 1990’s and he has exhibited photography and artwork in several gallery group shows. His work of seascapes / landscapes, reflects a personal sense of synchronicity between light, color, shape…searching for the abstract, that appears in our worlds. Colao spent three years in Big Sur before moving to Los Angeles. Life in Big Sur was profound and eternal.
