About

Michele D’Ermo.

Painting is Michele D’Ermo’s response to beauty. Art and nature are so closely intertwined it is impossible to say which precedes the other. This enigma has impelled Michele to study the perpetual and beguiling changes of the natural world. Where sea and sky form horizon, where land and water merge, where light and shadow intersect; all become mysterious in both nature and in her paintings.

Inspired by the work of Turner, Constable and Whistler, Michele studies the effects of light on water as the source of where nature’s other elements meet, as dictated by its ever-changing aspects. The organic shapes of her landscapes are minimally bare with recognizable destinations enhanced by intangible color fields. Her occasional use of horizontal bands of color remind us of Rothko’s iconic multiform paintings.

Fluctuating states of water and sky infuse Michele’s work with tension and release, allowing the lasting image to be atmospheric in theme without sacrificing structural clarity. The surfaces appear effortless and nearly transparent, resulting in the luminous quality her paintings exhibit. The transitions of light and shadow at various times of day and night are captured in the ever-shifting horizon line, which depict the movement of fleeting light. Underlying themes are palpably remembered sensations rather than direct observations of the natural world. The details may fade but the feelings linger. As the images emerge, a timeless depiction of beauty is created of memory and imagination.

Michele has exhibited her work for over two decades in museums and galleries in both New York City and the Hamptons. These include 1stdibs Gallery at the New York Design Center, Silas Marder Gallery, Guild Hall, Elisa Contemporary Arts, the Parrish Art Museum and Cheryl Hazen Gallery. Her paintings are often featured in the film and television industries, including multiple projects for HBO Films and NBC and CBS network television series. D’Ermo often collaborates with interior designers and architects on special projects and commissioned works of art.
