Antique & Unique, Masterly Carved, Early to Mid Victorian Satyr Mask Sculpture

About the Item

One of a kind and marvelously hand carved wall sculpture, mid-1800s. For the collectors of only the rarest and the most original. Over the decades we have seen some beautifully created satyrs, because in the 19th century they were not seldomly incorporated in pieces such as clocks, ceramics and bronze sculptures. Many artisans in the 1800s were inspired by ancient (Greek) mythology in general and by these unique creatures in particular. These cheerful and naughty beings were part of the 'entourage' of the Dionysus, god of the grape harvest, wine making etc. On a deeper psycholigical level, maybe the cheerful and naughty nature of satyrs has something to do with the nature of men after drinking (too) much of the devine 'grapejuice'. What we find extra special about this both cheerful and naughty looking satyr is that he is the first one that we have ever seen who is not 'male caucasian-like'. We therefor believe that this very rare specimen could very well be Dutch or British colonial. Anyone who is capable of creating such a detailed and expressive Satyr face out of a wooden log, in our view, truly is a master carver. And for us to have found this superb quality antique in museum worthy condition again felt like a blessing. With this woodtype being nutwood it made creating this detailed work of art even more difficult and thanks to its age this sculpture has also grown an amazing patina. This is one of those antiques that is even more beautiful in real life. No matter where you decide to wall-mount this fine art museum worthy antique, it will never fail to impress and it will also make a great conversation piece. Mind you, our price for this unique, meaningful and incredibly decorative antique includes perfect packing and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days.
