Kintsugi Sound Mirror-a focal wall mounted cast sculpture that alters sound

About the Item

The sound bowl(s) is inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi ("golden joinery”), also known as Kintsukuroi. As a philosophy, Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than as something to disguise. The philosophy also has similarities to wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect, and other concepts such as the acceptance of change and fate as aspect of human life. Two unique bowls of the same size are available and can be wall-mounted together. Please note they are designed to compliment one another. One bowl has the bright rose gold colour to the joins, the other has a lighter black colour. Each bowl is first cast with polymer plaster, then shattered. They are then pieced back together using a technique similar to Kintsugi ("golden joinery" - also known as Kintsukuroi). This is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered precious metals, which illuminates the join rather than disguises it. The effect is that these bowls, wall-mounted as though museum objects, appear not just to be the relics of a past, or possibly future civilisation, but to give us cause to reflect our own embrace of change. Palmer’s practice explores the potential of materials beyond their known perimeters, often taking him to the brink of success or failure, yet creating results that are as stunning and unexpected as they are uncontrived. So it is with these bowls, whose form reshapes the sound we make in front of them, in a sense breaking and reshaping sound, as though lending us an experience of ourselves in a past or future dimensions.
