Gennaro Favai (Venezia 1879 - Venezia 1958) Palace Cà da Mosto in Venice Signed and dated lower left: G Favai Venezia 1909 In 1900 he was awarded a medal at the San Francisco International Exposition; in 1904, probably always encouraged by De Maria, he participated in the world exhibition of Saint Louis with the painting Canal at sunset (for which he obtained a medal); the following year he created one of the most famous self-portraits (Self-portrait for young people, 1905, Venice, Ca 'Pesaro). Despite the regular presence at the Venice Biennale (first time in 1907, with Cortile veneziano, and then again in the editions of 1909, 1910, 1924, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1936 and 1948), his landscapes obtained more success at the foreign than at home. He stayed in Paris for a long time between 1906 and 1915, exhibiting at the annual Salons (in 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1911); he also had the opportunity to make himself known throughout Europe: among others, he recalled the first personal exhibition of 1910 in Dresden and his participation in 1911 at the Barcelona International Exposition, in which he was awarded for the painting Madreperla. During his long experience in the French capital, where he came into contact with the artists of the Ecole de Paris, F. preferred to deepen his knowledge of the paintings of C. Monet and F. Ziem; in these same years he made a long journey to London, which allowed him to get to know the works of W. Turner. These trips and stays abroad helped to free the views of F. from the dark tones and to enrich his painting with elements of liberty taste (Notre-Dame à Paris 1907; catal., 1942, pp. Nn; see also Dal Canton, 1992, pp. 268 s.). In those years he continued his intense exhibition activity abroad: at the Chaine et Simenson gallery in Paris (in 1913), at the Coupil gallery in London (in 1914) and at the Henry Paine Whitney gallery in New York in 1916 (for a list of exhibitions up to 1933 see the Jandolo gallery catalog, 1933). In 1916, after marrying the writer Maria Kievits, he moved for a short period to Taormina, where he performed Vecchia siciliana (catal., 1942, n. 60) and L'Etna seen from Taormina (ibid., N. 66). In 1918 he went to Capri, where he remained for about three years, during which he collaborated with E. Cerio, of which he illustrated one of the numerous publications entitled The house in the landscape of Capri (published in Capri in 1922). Impressed by the architecture and sunlight of these places, he created some works with a sharply traced graphic sign and with strongly contrasting colors. His drawings of Positano and the Amalfi coast are also famous (published in Rome in 1925 with the title The Amalfi coast). 1930 is the collection of 56 drawings entitled L'isola di Capri. In those years, F. had begun to engrave on etching, and then, after another trip to Paris in 1930, he began to devote himself to lithography and aquatint. With these different procedures he came to develop an entirely original expressive style, with a robust and vigorous mark. These experiences gave rise to views dedicated to Venice, Capri, Positano, Ravello, Paris and New York. In 1921 the F. had participated in the Roman Biennial and the year following the XII Exhibition of Ca 'Pesaro (he had already exhibited there in 1908 and 1911). After this date he was often in the United States (in 1923 at Kingor's Gallery and in 1928 at the Anderson Gallery in New York; in 1925 and in 1931 at the Casson Gallery in Boston and, the following year, again in New York in The Legget Studio gallery ). Without ever interrupting his research on painting techniques (in 1932 he realized the collection of aquatints with Vedute di Venezia, Algiers and Paris: Ponente, 1994, p. 110), in recent years he based his painting on fantastic and visionary compositional solutions , in which the landscape is depicted from above, illuminated with flashes of light that highlight every detail (From the Frari bell tower, drawing: catal., 1987, pnn; Punta della Dogana, ibid.). The last ones were those organized by the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation of Venice in 1950 and 1954. F. died in Venice on February 14th. 1958. In October 1958 at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation gallery a large commemorative exhibition was organized with numerous paintings and some drawings and engravings. Another retrospective was organized in 1987 by the Il Cavallino gallery in Venice. The measurement shown is of the painting without frame. Italian Fine Arts Authority must check this item in order to allow its exportation. This process lasts about 60 days.
