About the Item
Add a touch of historic French charm with this elegant antique Aubusson drawing. Created in Aubusson, France circa 1820, this delicate gouache on paper features a hand-painted floral garland of pink, red, purple, and blue blossoms entwined with lush green foliage on a pale beige ground. Set under glass in a giltwood frame with fabric mat, the artwork can be displayed horizontally or vertically. It remains in excellent condition with subtle age wear that enhances its authenticity and texture.
Originally painted as a tapestry “cartoon,” this decorative design would have guided the artisans of Aubusson—France’s oldest tapestry center, recognized by Louis XIV as a Manufacture Royale in 1665. Each color and line helped weavers translate painted designs into woven masterpieces, making this surviving example a rare link to the artistry of early 19th-century French textile tradition.
