Edwin Scheier Sand Painting

About the Item

The surrealist sand paintings produced by Edwin Scheier in the 70's and 80's are among the most compelling additions to a mid century modern or contemporary interior. World renowned for their work in ceramics, Mary and Edwin Scheier developed the ceramics industry in Puerto Rico shortly after WW2 and subsequently spend over a decade in Mexico. Included in the sale is a copy of correspondence with Edwin regarding this work just shortly before his death in 2008. He describes the technique as a wax base on a heated copper plate. The work is signed and dated on the reverse. The subject appears to be a surrealist memento mori with a pair of humans sliding trapped and subject to the tragedy of the sands of time in an hourglass as they are food funneled inevitably as food for fish, chickens and worms. One might also interpret the hourglass as a wineglass and the doomsday scenario a warning of the folly of excess. Perhaps it suggests both or yet another concept... It is surrealism... after all.

  • Edwin Scheier 1964 Modernist Sculpture of Man Riding Jaguar Which Has Eaten Man
    By Edwin and Mary Scheier
    Located in Mobile, AL
An early and fully three dimensional sculpture by Edwin Scheier exhibiting a symbolic or mythological representation that represents the circle of life. The bent wood, carving, piercing and rope work are all manifest at a high level in this quixotic almost whimsical work of 1964. Edwin (and Mary) spent over a decade in the 1960's and 70's in Oaxaca, Mexico where he often worked with Guanacaste wood and local fibers, to great success. A perfect compliment to a mid century modern interior and a must have go along with any major mid century and/or Scheier ceramics...
