Familia Lorenzo, Hand-Painted Wood, Mexican Loteria

About

This colorful set of pieces was created by the Mexican artist Fernando Lorenzo. Produced with vinyl paint on wood, these works recreate on a bigger scale images from the popular Mexican game of chance called Lotería, similar to Bingo. Instead of plain numbers, Lotería cards use 54 different images, which depict natural elements such as animals and plants as well as characters and objects common in the traditional local culture. Lorenzo has recovered the images and reinvented them on a shinier and more vivid palette. He is the youngest member of a family that has created popular art for three generations. Native to the state of Guerrero, they have specialized on the craft of vinyl paint. The founder of this tradition among them, Lucas Lorenzo Gaspar, was born in the small town of Xalitla. Formerly a farmer, he discovered his passion for painting during his trips to Mexico City. Although he first explored the technique of painting on fig tree paper, he soon discovered he preferred painting with vinyl paint on wood, which was also well received by the people. This activity was continued and enriched by his son Aureliano and later by Lorenzo, who incorporated popular images from the region into their work, including these fine paintings, which are a magnificent sample of the rich popular art currently created in Mexico.
