A remarkable 10-inch handcrafted trompe-l'œil ceramic display plate by acclaimed Norwegian-French ceramic artist Christine Viennet (b. 1947). Executed in Viennet’s signature barbotine relief technique, this piece features remarkably lifelike, sculpted garden vegetables set against a blue-and-white floral patterned porcelain dish. The composition includes a red onion, green bell pepper, ripe tomato, garlic bulb, cucumber, and fig nestling among vibrant green leafy foliage. Working from Chateau de Raissac in Béziers, France, Christine Viennet is world-renowned for reviving the Renaissance tradition of Bernard Palissy. Her studio pieces blend high sculptural artistry with tactile realism, making her trompe-l'œil food plates highly sought after by international collectors and luxury interior designers. Born in Norway in 1947, Christine Viennet studied at the Oslo School of Art before completing apprenticeships under noted Norwegian ceramicists Rolf Hansen and Bente von Krogh. Between 1965 and 1971, she expanded her formal training in France, working alongside Father Paoli at the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa and within the renowned tapestry and design ateliers of Jean Lurçat and Jean Picart Le Doux in Perpignan. Deeply influenced by 16th-century French Renaissance master Bernard Palissy, Viennet is celebrated internationally for her exuberant trompe-l'œil ceramic sculptures, vessels, and wall plates. Her work seamlessly bridges realistic naturalism and imaginative fantasy, capturing terrestrial flora, sea life, fruits, and garden vegetables with remarkable tactile detail. Since 1990, her studio and personal museum—housing an extraordinary collection of European ceramics and historical Palissy ware from the 16th to 21st centuries—have been based at the historic Château de Raissac near Béziers in southern France, where she continues to live and work. Her works are held in permanent museum collections worldwide, including the Musée de Sèvres in Paris and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
