Jack Beckemeyer 1976 Red Blue Orange and Yellow Printed Acetate Painting

About the Item

Large scale stenciled painting by Jack Beckemeyer. The piece is well documented with three notes included. One note card is pasted to the back, indicating the exact acquisition date. The painting was purchased on July 12, 1976 at the South County Bank art exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri. We opened up the frame to clean the acrylic panel and found two more notes. A label from Mark Twain Gallery identifies the work as a part of a series of “Red Plastic Paintings” by Jack Beckemeyer. This note describes how the painting was created using a stencil of expanded metal and paint on transparent red plastic film. The artist painted both sides of this film in order to create a floating pattern effect. Another small white label denotes the piece as being part of US Bancorp art collection. The piece is housed in a chrome frame with a clear panel of acrylic for protection. Little is written about the artist himself. Despite little biographical information Jack Beckemeyer’s work is his legacy. included in the Cleveland Art Museum’s collection and catalogued in the Dayton Art Institute. 65.5” Wide x 1.5” Deep x 48.25” High Painting and frame are in original condition. May be some scratches on acrylic panel and frame.

Peter Robert Keil was born to an artist blacksmith father whom he lost very early in his childhood during the Second World War. During the end phase of the war, Keil's mother, also an artistically talented woman, took her son and struggled her way to West Berlin where they settled. This is where Peter Robert Keil grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Berlin-Wedding and where he discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionistic artists and in Pablo Picasso's work.
