Large Glass Tile Mosaic of Native American Family on Walnut Board, 1960s

About the Item

A large and exceptionally well done Mid-Century Modern glass and glazed ceramic tile mosaic on walnut board depicting a Native American trio, titled “Family”. Stylized figures of a man, woman, and girl crafted of thousands of meticulously cut and placed richly colored mosaic tiles set in black grout and framed and accented by gracefully formed thin brass borders and lines. Invitingly tactile, with hair, eyes, and various columns of raised matte black rectangular elements contrasting handsomely with the shimmering dimensional effect of the tiles when viewed from various angles. Mounted on a substantial four-foot-tall solid walnut plank with “Family” handwritten on verso near the top.

A characteristically sensitive portrait by the artist, with his subject's red-eyed expression and dejected body language suggesting that there would be no more rides that day. With a well-earned reputation as a skilled American Realist, the short, finely hashed brushstroke technique that Davidson employs to achieve a detailed, luminous effect is all the more impressive upon closer examination. Signed "Herbert Davidson...
