About the Item

A large and wonderfully decorative Palissy ware style Majolica faience ceramic Lobster platter wall sculpture. Mid-20th century, Portugal, decorated in relief with large central lobster, mussels, seaweed, sand, sea-shells, and other applied elements, in naturalistic hand painted polychrome tromp l'oeil, mounted over a circular dished charger plate wall plaque with holes and wire for easy wall hanging on the verso. circa 1940s-1960s Dimensions (approx): 13" Diameter, 2.5" High Beautiful intricate detail, bold rich coloring, featuring natural ocean and beach life. Presents splendidly. May have minor age appropriate wear. What is Palissy? Bernard Palissy (c.1510-1589) was a French Huguenot potter, hydraulics engineer and craftsman, famous for having struggled for sixteen years to imitate Chinese porcelain. He is best known for his so-called "rusticware", typically highly decorated large oval platters featuring small animals in relief among vegetation, the animals apparently often being molded from casts taken of dead specimens. Typically, each component is modeled and painted individually. Palissy was the father of what is now called Majolica. This distinctive style of pottery (Palissy ware) is always characterized by sculptural three-dimensional models, often marine creatures or animals such as snakes, fish, lizards, frogs, and snails arranged onto large platters.
