Mosi Art Object by Studio Yoon Seok-Hyeon

About the Item

Mosi Art Object by Studio Yoon Seok-Hyeon Dimensions: D 20 x W 43 x H 150 cm Materials:Mosi, Ott (Ottchil). Fabric Weight: 15kg Today, modern textiles are produced cheaper and faster to the utmost under the market logic. Therefore, they are also consumed cheaper and faster, and these patterns of production and consumption have a variety of adverse effects on the environment. The original textures and colors of each fabric are replaced by countless chemical components and lose their value. To rediscover the lost values of the textile materials, Studio Yoon Seok-hyeon pays attention to the Mosi, a Korean traditional ramie fabric. Although ramie fabric is produced worldwide, the traditional Mosi of Hansan in Korea is distinctive with its high quality and long history of production and use. The cultivation and harvesting of Mosi grass, the unique weaving process, and even the bleaching and dyeing of the textile are made in natural ways, so it is eco-friendly and sustainable. Its production process has been designated as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage of humanity in recognition of its outstanding quality as well as its craftsmanship and community culture. The Mosi is produced only by the hand of artisans in the Hansan area, and it takes about 2 months to make 1 pil of Mosi (W30cm x L2000cm). Craftsmen's spirits and time are woven into the best quality of Mosi. The 'MOSI’, an Ottchil Mosi installation, is an assembly of natural materials and it introduces the potentials, values, and aesthetics of time. Ott as a natural paint also needs a long time to extract its natural color and be dried on Mosi. Studio Yoon Seok-hyeon does believe that these slow processes certainly can create new perspectives which are needed and applicable to contemporary textiles. Seok-hyeon Yoon I enjoy revaluing materials and objects which are always around us. Surroundings of everyday life often become a starting point for my design projects. I observe and analyze them and then try to link them to design, environment, society, and industry. My interest in projects is the materiality and socio-cultural value of design objects. With this interest, each of my projects reflects undiscovered stories of human life. As a designer, I interpret them with my own perspective and create objects to support and enhance our everyday life. My design process follows concept arrangement based on exploring a subject, in-depth research for materiality and contexts, hands-on practice such as drawing and model making and production.
