About

Charles De Wolf Brownell (6 febbraio 1822, Providence, Rhode Island, Stati Uniti, 6 giugno 1909, Bristol, Rhode Island, Stati Uniti) Potrait of Abraham Lincoln Signed and dated lower right: Brownell Charles, 1861 Charles Brownell was born in Providence in 1822, the third of six children of the physician Pardon Brownell (1788-1846) and his wife Lucia Emilia De Wolf (1796-1884). The parents came from wealthy, long-established families in Rhode Island. When Charles Brownell was two, the family moved to East Hartford, Connecticut. Here he grew up and attended school. Later he studied law and settled in 1843 as a lawyer in Hartford. He lived here in a house right in front of Charter Oak, a symbol of the history of the Connecticut tree, which served as a motive for one of his most famous paintings in 1857, previously this old oak was already by Ralph Earl (1790), Thomas Cole (undated sketch) and "interpreted" at least three times by Frederic Edwin Church (circa 1845). After a few years, Brownell resumed his legal career and lived in Liberty, Virginia, 1848-49 and in Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1850. In 1852 he published the book The Indian races of North and South America, a complete treatise and illustrated on the indigenous peoples of North and South America, which was reprinted several times in the following years. Around the beginning of 1850, he began to design landscape motifs while traveling in the Connecticut River Valley. Brownell soon studied in Hartford painting with Julius Busch (1821-1858) and Joseph Ropes (1812-1885) and completed his training in 1854 with the Master of Arts at Trinity College (Hartford) of. The following year he exhibited his first works in the Hartford Agricultural Society exhibition. From 1856 he spent several winters in Cuba, where he was stimulated by the charm of exotic vegetation, he repeatedly made landscapes and studies with tropical motifs. In 1860 Brownell settled in New York City, moved to a studio and presented several works at the National Academy of Design in 1861 and 1862. He met the main representatives of the Hudson River School in the city, such as the Church of Frederic Edwin and John Frederick Kensett, who focused mainly on Brownell as landscape painting. He embarked on several boat trips to Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, where some of his famous coastal paintings were created. Brownell married Henrietta Knowlton in 1865 with Angell Pierce (1837-1897), who had previously been married to her first husband, Dr. George A. Pierce had divorced. From this first marriage he already had two children, from marriage with Brownell issued between 1866 and 1876 four children together. The family lived mainly in Bristol (Rhode Island), his wife's hometown, but he interrupted his stays again and again for long journeys. In 1871, for example, the family left for a multi-year tour in Europe, from which they returned to the United States in 1877, after a trip to Egypt. In Europe, Brownell studied the works of local artists and created many of his works. In the following decades, Brownell often travelled. Then he stayed in Mexico, visited Jamaica and South America. The artist's work reflects the experiences of numerous journeys. Brownell had a passionate interest in nature and his intense observation of different landscapes is reflected in his works with an almost accurate reproduction of the details of scientific precision. Brownell died in 1909 and is buried in the Juniper Hill Cemetery in Bristol. The measurement shown is of the painting without frame.
